Electric Actuators with Integrated Controller

The electric actuators with integrated controller represent a modern and compact evolution of traditional linear actuators.

They combine in a single mechanical and electronic unit: the motor, the screw-nut transmission, the position sensors, and the control controller.

This architecture greatly simplifies the installation, wiring, and maintenance of automated systems.

Power Supply and Control Interfaces

These actuators are generally powered by direct current:

  • 24 V DC for standard industrial or robotic applications,

  • 48 to 51.2 V DC for more powerful systems, particularly those mounted on vehicles or mobile machines.

In terms of communication, several control interfaces are possible:

  • CAN Bus: for direct integration into a control network (vehicle, PLC, machine).

  • PWM (Pulse Width Modulation): simple proportional control, used in compact systems.

  • On/Off Inputs: for direct commands such as 'forward / reverse / stop'.

This variety of interfaces allows great flexibility of integration, from simple control to full supervision via a fieldbus.

Compact and Intelligent Unit

Integrating the controller directly into the actuator eliminates the need for external control boxes and long wiring harnesses.

The onboard electronic module directly manages the motor, the limit switches, and the internal sensors (position, current, temperature).

Moreover, it integrates advanced software functions, such as:

  • Acceleration/deceleration ramp, for smooth and jerk-free movements.

  • Current limitation, to protect the mechanics and motor against overloads.

  • Target position or closed-loop control, allowing precise control of the stroke without additional external sensors.

Technical and Practical Advantages

Actuators with integrated controllers offer several key advantages:

AdvantageDescription
Simplicity of InstallationLess wiring, no separate control box.
CompactnessThe electronics are directly integrated into the body of the actuator.
Integrated DiagnosticsFeedback on system status: current consumption, temperature, fault codes, etc.
Facilitated MaintenanceAnomalies can be quickly identified via CAN communication or status indicators.
Internal ProgrammingPossibility to adjust ramps, speeds, current thresholds, or positions directly via the manufacturer's software.

Typical Applications

Electric actuators with integrated controllers are found in many modern applications:

  • Industrial and utility vehicles (hatch, seat, door controls, lifting systems).

  • Autonomous machines and mobile robots.

  • Tilt, height, or position adjustment systems in industry and construction.

  • Tools and equipment requiring precise linear control without an external controller.

In Summary

The actuators with integrated controllers combine power, precision, and simplicity in a single component.

Typically powered by 24 V or 48–51.2 V, they offer CAN, PWM, or On/Off interfaces, while integrating essential control, safety, and diagnostic functions.

This type of actuator is an ideal solution for compact, mobile, or decentralised systems where cable reduction and reliability are priorities.
